Children's Outreach Program

Volunteers of America — Western Nebraska coordinates a number of grant programs for services in the area. Children's Outreach started in 1998 with federal funds for area hospitals to provide home visits for women with new infants in the western panhandle of Nebraska.

Helping every child have a healthy beginning is the goal of the program. Local nurses visit all mothers with newborns, checking on the health of the baby and the mother, providing information about caring for newborns and helping connect mothers to needed services. Mothers regularly voice the feeling that they feel more confident after the visits. More specific outcomes are an increase in the number of women who breast feed their infants, improved health of mothers and infants as infections and jaundice are identified, and better mental health as women are referred to specialists and receive support.

Children's Outreach is supported in part by area hospitals, the Panhandle Public Health District, the Panhandle Partnership for Health and Human Services, and the Nebraska Children and Families Foundation.

About 75-80% of all women with newborns in the Panhandle receive home visits.
